Step 1 — Find your Day Master
The stem of your day pillar is you. It will be one of ten characters — Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal or Water, each in a yang or yin form. Yang Wood is a tall tree; yin Wood is a climbing vine. Yang Water is a river; yin Water is morning dew. The image matters: it sets the tone for how your energy expresses itself.
Step 2 — Judge strength, not virtue
The first real judgment in any reading: is the Day Master strong or weak? Strong means well-supported — born in a friendly season, surrounded by elements that feed it. Weak means under-resourced or heavily drained.
Neither is better. A strong chart converts pressure into output but can overreach; a weak chart is perceptive and adaptive but needs support structures. Everything that follows — which elements are “useful” to you — depends on this call.
Step 3 — Translate the Ten Gods
Every other character in your chart plays a role relative to your Day Master, and BaZi names these roles the Ten Gods. Ignore the dramatic names — they group into five plain functions: peers (same element: allies and competition), output (what you produce: expression, talent), wealth (what you control: money, results), officer/killing (what controls you: pressure, rules, career rank), and resource (what feeds you: learning, protection, support).
A chart heavy in output with weak resource reads very differently from one heavy in officer with strong resource — the first burns bright and needs refueling; the second carries responsibility comfortably but may under-express.
Step 4 — Layer the timing: luck pillars and annual years
Your natal chart is the machine; luck pillars are the road. Every ten years you enter a new pillar that tilts the elemental balance, and every year adds a smaller, faster layer on top. The same chart can feel blocked in one decade and unstoppable in the next — that's not the chart changing, it's the terrain.
Step 5 — A five-minute reading routine
Put it together: ① name the Day Master and its image; ② call strong or weak; ③ find the one or two elements the chart most needs; ④ check whether the current luck pillar and this year supply or drain those elements; ⑤ only then ask your actual question — job, relationship, money — and read the relevant god. Order matters: skipping to step ⑤ without ①–④ is how readings turn into horoscope mush.
Which part of the chart to read, depending on your question
- Career decision — switch, stay, or push for promotion — Read the officer/killing god and your month pillar (the career palace), then check whether the current luck pillar strengthens or squeezes them.
- Relationship question — Look at the day branch (your spouse palace) and the wealth god (for men) or officer god (for women) in traditional readings — then judge how this year's energy hits that palace.
- Chronic exhaustion or burnout — Compare output vs resource. Heavy output with thin resource means you're producing more than you're being fed — the fix is structural, not motivational.
- A big money move this year — Read the wealth god against your Day Master's strength: a weak Day Master with heavy wealth sees opportunity it can't hold. Timing and position size matter more than direction.

What does a “strong” Day Master actually mean?
It means the chart gives your element plenty of support — same-element peers and feeding resource, often reinforced by your birth season. It's about supply, not personality strength.
