Can ChatGPT Read Your BaZi Accurately? We Tested It

TL;DR
Split the question in two. Interpreting a chart: ChatGPT is genuinely decent — hand it correct pillars and it reasons about Ten Gods and element balance respectably. Casting the chart from your birth data: this is where it fails, often invisibly.
Three failure modes we hit repeatedly: it ignores true solar time entirely, it wobbles on solar-term month boundaries (charts near the 4th–8th of a month are coin-flips), and it never warns you — it produces a confident, plausible, wrong chart. If the chart is wrong, every word of the interpretation is about someone else.
What ChatGPT gets right
Let's be fair first. Given a correctly cast chart — four pillars, hidden stems, Ten Gods labeled — a frontier model reasons about it well: element balance, Day Master strength, useful-god candidates, personality patterns. The classical logic of BaZi is well represented in its training data, and interpretation is fundamentally a language task. That's exactly why AI BaZi tools (ours included) use LLMs for the reading layer.
The catch: interpretation quality is only as good as the chart underneath. And casting a chart is not a language task — it's a calendrical computation with hard edges.
Failure mode 1: no true solar time
BaZi hours follow the sun. A birth certificate records clock time — which in Madrid runs 75 minutes ahead of the sun, in Singapore 65, in Hong Kong 23 (see our 30-city conversion table). Ask ChatGPT to cast a chart from '15:10, Hong Kong' and it uses 15:10 as-is: 申 Shen hour. The sun says 14:47: 未 Wei hour. A quarter of the chart, silently wrong.
Worse, it won't ask about daylight saving. Summer births in the US and Europe carry a hidden extra hour that changes the hour pillar roughly half the time.
Failure mode 2: solar-term boundaries
BaZi months change at solar terms (节气) — astronomical instants that fall on slightly different dates and times each year. Born February 4th? Whether your month pillar belongs to the old month or the new one depends on the exact hour of 立春 that year, sometimes down to minutes. An engine looks it up in an ephemeris; a language model recalls it approximately — and approximately is exactly what a boundary can't tolerate.
In our tests, charts for births within two days of a solar term came back wrong often enough that we'd treat any such ChatGPT chart as a coin flip. Year-boundary births (late January to mid February) add a second trap: whether the year pillar has rolled over yet.
Failure mode 3: confident wrongness
The most dangerous part isn't the error rate — it's the absence of warnings. A proper tool tells you 'your birth time is near an hour boundary, here are both charts.' ChatGPT presents its guess with the same fluent confidence whether it's right or wrong, and the interpretation it builds on top will feel just as insightful either way. Plausibility is not accuracy.
The right way to use ChatGPT for BaZi
Cast the chart with a deterministic engine that corrects for true solar time and DST — then paste the finished pillars into ChatGPT and ask your questions. In that division of labor, ChatGPT is a fine free interpreter.

- You already got a ChatGPT BaZi reading and it felt accurate — The interpretation may be fine — but verify the pillars themselves against an engine before building on it. If the hour pillar differs, the reading described someone else.
- You were born near a solar term (roughly the 3rd–9th of any month) or near Chinese New Year — Do not trust any hand-waved month/year pillar. This is ephemeris territory; use an engine.
- You were born during DST or in a high-offset city (Madrid, Singapore, Chengdu, Houston…) — ChatGPT will almost certainly cast your hour pillar from the wrong time. Correct the time first, or use a tool that does.
- You want to keep using ChatGPT for the conversation — Fine — cast on BaziGPT free, copy the four pillars into your prompt, and let ChatGPT interpret a chart that's actually yours.

FAQ
So is ChatGPT useless for BaZi?
No — it's a capable interpreter and a poor caster. Use it for discussion on top of a verified chart, never for casting the chart itself.
Would giving ChatGPT my coordinates and asking it to correct solar time fix this?
It helps but doesn't fix the solar-term problem: boundary instants need an ephemeris, and a language model's recall of them is approximate. Arithmetic it can do; astronomical lookup it cannot.
Is BaziGPT's own reading also done by an AI?
Yes — the interpretation layer is an LLM, and we say so openly. The difference is the chart underneath: cast deterministically, solar-time corrected, boundary-checked. AI reads the chart; it never invents it.
